The luxury bus association operating routes from Katunayake Airport to Colombo Fort has launched a strike in response to the introduction of a new luxury bus service. The new service, which began on August 15, connects Katunayake Airport to Fort Main Railway Station and Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre.
Indika Gunasekara, president of the bus association, expressed strong objections to the new service. He emphasized that it is not an appropriate time to introduce new transport services given the ongoing presidential election. Gunasekara criticized the timing as politically motivated and detrimental to the existing bus operators.
Gunasekara highlighted that while the association’s fleet includes 71 luxury buses, only 29 are in regular use, with many operating just 10 days a month. He pointed out that the buses were originally allowed to start their routes from Katunayake Airport but were later rerouted to Avariwatta town due to security concerns and political pressure.
A significant point of contention is the pricing of the new service. The new buses charge 3,000 rupees per passenger, whereas the association’s buses charge 300 rupees. Gunasekara argues that the new pricing is excessive and out of touch with the needs of passengers.
Gunasekara has taken the issue to the President and relevant authorities, seeking resolution. He has threatened to expand the strike to the Negombo route if the concerns are not addressed promptly. The association has expressed that if the new service is deemed necessary, the existing fleet of 42 idle buses could be utilized to fulfill the transportation needs.
The strike has created a significant disruption in transport services between Katunayake Airport and Colombo Fort. The association’s action reflects broader concerns about competition and the management of transport services, highlighting the need for fair practices and consideration of existing operators.
The Ministry of Transport and Highways, along with the National Transport Commission, has been involved in addressing the situation, and further developments are awaited. The strike underscores the complexities of transport management and the impact of new services on established operators.
