The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to take disciplinary action against its members who have chosen to support President Ranil Wickramasinghe in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, contrary to the party’s stance.
A spokesperson for the SLPP confirmed that letters notifying the MPs of the disciplinary measures will be sent out soon. The party plans to cancel the membership of those who defy the party’s decision.
This decision follows a recent meeting of the SLPP’s political committee, where it was resolved to nominate a candidate from within the party for the presidential election. The committee also agreed that MPs who oppose this decision would face consequences.
Over the past few weeks, the party’s politburo has faced significant pressure from within to act swiftly against those who have publicly opposed the party’s directive. Numerous SLPP activists have reportedly urged the leadership to revoke the party membership of dissenting MPs.
The SLPP spokesperson emphasized that the party is determined to enforce discipline and unity within its ranks as the election approaches, with letters of disciplinary action expected to be issued promptly.
