After evading capture for almost two decades, Antonio Riano, one of Ohio’s “most wanted” fugitives, has been arrested by U.S. Marshals in his hometown of Zapotitlan Palmas, Oaxaca, Mexico, where he was employed as a police officer.
Riano, now 72, was wanted for the 2004 shooting death of Benjamin Becarra, 25, in Butler County, Ohio.
The arrest, made on August 1, was the result of cooperation between the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office, U.S. Marshals, and U.S. Department of Justice, with assistance from Mexican authorities.
Riano, who was featured on the “America’s Most Wanted” series in 2005, has been extradited to Ohio, where he appeared in court and was held without bond on charges of murder and felony assault.
He is scheduled to return to court later this month.
