Samagi Jana Balawegaya presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa has pledged to abolish the executive presidency if he wins the upcoming election. Speaking at a rally in Ruwanwella on August 18, 2024, Premadasa emphasized his commitment to dismantling the executive presidential system, which he believes has contributed to the country’s political and economic crises.
Premadasa addressed the crowd with a promise of change, stating, “On September 21st, we will usher in an era where this country and its people will be freed from suffering.” He criticized the current administration’s economic policies, particularly the misleading promises of financial assistance, and vowed to create a system that supports unemployed youth, especially those in small-scale tea production.
He also accused the current President of protecting the Rajapaksa family, who are widely blamed for the country’s economic downfall. “The President of the country is protecting the Rajapaksas today,” Premadasa said, reiterating his resolve to remove the executive presidency, a position he believes has been used to shield corrupt leaders.
Premadasa’s promise to abolish the executive presidency marks a significant stance in his campaign, reflecting widespread public discontent with the concentration of power in a single office.
