In a decision made more out of desperation, SLPP presidential candidate Namal Rajapaksa has extended an open invitation to MPs who previously left the party, encouraging them to return as the election approaches. Speaking during a visit to the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya on Sunday (18), Rajapaksa emphasized that his focus is on serving the people rather than engaging in political maneuvering. He was accompanied by prominent figures, including Chamal Rajapaksa and State Minister of Power and Energy D.V. Chanaka, as he sought blessings at the temple.
Rajapaksa reiterated his long-standing vision to transform Hambanthota into a major hub for aviation and naval activities in South Asia. He lamented that efforts to achieve this goal had been stalled by the previous government, which he referred to as the “good governance government.” However, he expressed optimism that after the September 21 election, these plans would be back on track, with the potential to create nearly a million direct and indirect jobs.
When asked by a journalist about rumors that certain MPs who had left the SLPP might rejoin, Rajapaksa downplayed the significance of such political shifts, stating that the real power lies with the people’s decisions. “My dealings are only with the people,” he said, underscoring his commitment to grassroots supporters who have remained loyal to the party.
Rajapaksa acknowledged that while some higher-ranking officials may change their allegiances for personal gain, the core of the SLPP remains steadfast. He reassured party members and supporters that those who left the party are welcome to return at any time, emphasizing the need for unity in the lead-up to the election.
In his address, Rajapaksa urged the SLPP’s base to rally behind the party’s policies and work together to secure a victory in the upcoming election. “This is your election. This is the political movement you trust. Let’s work to ensure that the policies we believe in, win in the upcoming election. The SLPP will definitely win this election,” he asserted, expressing confidence that the SLPP’s vision for the future will resonate with voters across the country.
