Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has revealed that members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and other political parties who have decided to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election are in discussions to form a new political force.
Speaking to the media after visiting the Malwatu and Asgiri patriarchs in Kandy yesterday (18), the Prime Minister expressed his full support for this initiative, emphasizing the need to protect and advance the progress the country has made over the past two years.
“The majority of the MPs who supported the government have now decided to back President Wickremesinghe, recognizing his role in leading the country out of a crisis. These MPs come from various parties, not just the SLPP. We are all working together to ensure the continued success of this progress,” Gunawardena stated.
He also reassured that MPs at all levels, from local government to parliament, would be protected and supported, dismissing concerns about potential threats or issues with candidacy in future elections.
“The discussions to create this new political force have my full backing, and I believe it is essential for the country’s future,” he added.
