COLOMBO (August 19, 2024) — Dr. Deepal Perera, a specialist at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo, has voiced concerns over a significant increase in child illnesses, particularly respiratory conditions and viral fevers, in recent days. He highlighted a worrying rise in cases of influenza among children, which could lead to further complications if not properly managed.
Dr. Perera explained that symptoms such as persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, and fever could indicate a range of illnesses, including viral infections and even childhood asthma. He noted that the spread of viral fever, particularly affecting the upper respiratory tract, has been observed, with the potential to worsen as the season progresses.
“Parents should be cautious and keep children with symptoms of cough, cold, and fever at home as much as possible,” Dr. Perera advised. “It’s also essential for symptomatic children to wear masks to prevent spreading the illness to others.”
He also warned that if a child’s cough is accompanied by chest pain or if a fever persists, it could be a sign of pneumonia, which requires immediate medical attention. Dr. Perera urged parents to remain vigilant, especially as the prevalence of respiratory tract infections may increase during colder months.
The hospital is preparing for a potential surge in cases and is urging the public to take preventive measures seriously to protect children’s health.
