Mahinda Deshapriya, Chairman of the National Delimitation Committee for Local Government institutions, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision on the postponement of the 2023 Local Government Elections, calling it a victory for the people. Speaking in Anuradhapura, Deshapriya criticized the delay of the elections and praised the court’s ruling as a significant step toward justice.
Deshapriya expressed confidence that the Local Government Election will be scheduled soon after the 2024 presidential election. He emphasized that the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that postponing or neglecting elections infringes on citizens’ rights, framing the court’s recent decision as a long-awaited but necessary action.
He added, “This decision was anticipated, given the Supreme Court’s consistent stance on the importance of holding elections. We expect the election commission to arrange the Local Government Election promptly after the conclusion of the presidential election.”
