Gampaha — At a public rally in Yakkala on August 24, Namal Rajapaksa, the presidential candidate for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), articulated his vision for the country’s economic future. Rajapaksa emphasized a shift from the current administration’s “unlimited tax policy” to one that is “affordable for the common people.”
Rajapaksa stated that his administration would prioritize creating a tax system that is manageable for everyday citizens while still addressing fiscal responsibilities. He assured that his policy would strive to strike a balance between satisfying both the local population and international financial institutions like the IMF.
Highlighting the need for renewed development efforts, Rajapaksa committed to resuming halted projects and advancing infrastructure development. He framed his approach as a continuation of the work begun under his uncle, President Mahinda Rajapaksa. “We will restart the stopped development of this country. We will continue from where President Mahinda Rajapaksa left off,” he said.
The rally in Yakkala was part of Rajapaksa’s broader campaign strategy, which includes a focus on economic revitalization and infrastructural development. His promises reflect an effort to address the challenges faced by Sri Lankans under the current tax regime, while also positioning himself as a candidate who will build on the legacy of his predecessor.
