Top Sri Lankan musicians have expressed their amazement at the incredible performance of Shannen Wick, who captivated both the Blind Auditions of The Voice Season 13 and the entire nation of Australia with her rendition of Sam Brown’s “Stop.” Alston Koch, Geoffrey Fernando, and Derek Wickramanayake, all well-known figures in the music industry, were deeply impressed by Shannen’s talent.
Alston Koch praised her, saying, “Absolutely amazing talent & the best I’ve heard so far in years.” Geoffrey Fernando added, “She has a nice style of singing with a great and powerful voice. Nice control and pitch. She seems humble too. I wish her all the best in the future.” Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s guitar virtuoso Derek Wickramanayake remarked, “In my opinion, she is just brilliant in every aspect. Her voice, singing, looks, and personality are second to none. I predict a bright future for her on the global music stage.”
If you thought only the Melbourne Cup could bring Australia to a standstill, Shannen’s powerful performance in Sydney on Monday night proved otherwise, leaving the entire nation spellbound. A talented singing teacher from Australia, Shannen entered the competition at the urging of her students, and she certainly did not disappoint. Her mesmerizing rendition prompted all four judges—Guy Sebastian, LeAnn Rimes, Kate Miller-Heidke, and Adam Lambert—to spin their chairs around, each eager to be her coach.
In a dramatic moment that had the audience and judges on the edge of their seats, Shannen ultimately chose Guy Sebastian as her mentor, much to the disappointment of the other three panelists. Shannen’s musical talent runs deep, rooted in a family with a rich history of passion and artistry. Her parents, both Sri Lankan by birth and now residing in Australia, have a background in both sports and aviation. Her father, Errol Wickremesinghe, was a former St. Thomas’ College Kotte cricketer, and her mother, Lalinthi Wijesinghe, was a striking Air Lanka flight stewardess in the 1980s. Shannen’s younger sister, along with her supportive parents, was also present at the event, cheering her on.
Music flows through Shannen’s family, with her father Errol’s entire family deeply connected to it. His brothers Ashton, Ricky, Alen, Glen, and sisters Claudette and Jessica are all avid music lovers. Ashton, in particular, stands out as one of Sri Lanka’s biggest Elvis Presley fans, further enriching the family’s vibrant musical legacy. She is also the grand niece of Tony Ferdinandus the well known musician and lead guitarist of the band Pearl.
Shannen Wick’s remarkable performance on The Voice is only the start of her journey, and the world is excited to see what this rising star will accomplish next.
