'Those Who Violate Election Laws Cannot Be Trusted to Govern' - Catholic Bishops' Conference
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sri Lanka has issued a powerful statement ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election, calling for the election of a leader with the wisdom and courage needed to bring about significant system changes and eradicate corruption. The bishops strongly cautioned against trusting candidates who violate election laws, asserting that such individuals lack the integrity and justice required to govern the country effectively.
In their statement, the bishops urged presidential candidates to refrain from deceiving voters with false promises and unethical practices. They emphasized the importance of maintaining campaign integrity, urging voters to elect a leader who upholds democratic and moral principles and respects Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity.
The Conference also invoked the teachings of Jesus, encouraging candidates to view leadership as a service rather than a quest for power. They appealed for a free and fair election, highlighting the need for unity and urging all concerned to work towards a united Sri Lanka.
The bishops further stressed the importance of justice, calling for thorough investigations into past crimes, including the misappropriation of national assets, politically motivated abductions, and the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. They insisted that those responsible must be held accountable, and no interference should be allowed in the pursuit of justice for the victims.
The statement concluded with a call to the faithful to pray for the nation and its leaders, seeking divine guidance to ensure that the right choice is made in the upcoming election.
