The Sri Lankan government has decided to permit Members of Parliament (MPs) to purchase two firearms, as announced by Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena. This measure is intended to allow MPs to retain ownership of the firearms even after they leave office.
Minister Gunawardena explained the decision during a press conference on August 27, citing concerns about violence and security. He referred to past incidents of severe violence against MPs, including the brutal attacks and arson during the recent struggles in Sri Lanka, as well as similar events in Bangladesh where 26 MPs were killed.
Acknowledging the increase in violence over recent years, Gunawardena emphasized that the government’s decision aims to enhance the security of MPs by allowing them to acquire and retain firearms for personal protection.
