In a recent presidential election rally in Addalachchenei on August 27, Sajith Premadasa, the opposition leader and presidential candidate of Samagi Jana Balawega, made a compelling promise to transform the Ampara district into a major development hub under his future administration.
Premadasa highlighted several key initiatives aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural sector and supporting local farmers. He announced plans to supply high-quality 50 kg fertilizer bundles at a reduced rate of 5,000 rupees, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on farmers. In addition to this, he pledged to make oil fertilizer available at more affordable prices, further supporting agricultural productivity.
A significant aspect of Premadasa’s plan includes establishing a fixed guaranteed price for paddy. He explained that this measure is designed to protect farmers from fluctuating market conditions and the exploitative practices of mill mafias. By implementing a fair pricing formula, he intends to ensure that farmers receive a reasonable return for their produce, while consumers benefit from affordable rice prices.
Premadasa criticized the current system, asserting that it disadvantages both farmers and consumers. “The current system is failing both ends of the supply chain,” he said. “By instituting these reforms, we aim to rectify this imbalance, safeguard the interests of our farmers, and provide fair prices for consumers.”
The rally, part of a series of public engagements aimed at solidifying Premadasa’s candidacy, saw a strong turnout, with local residents expressing their support for his development agenda. Premadasa’s promises are part of his broader vision to address economic challenges and promote equitable growth across Sri Lanka.
He concluded his speech with a call for unity and collective effort, urging the electorate to support his vision for a prosperous and developed Ampara district.
