(COLOMBO) –
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe said he will appoint a committee to look into matters regarding the enactment of fresh laws against corruption.
He said the committee will comprise members appointed by the Speaker, professional association, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Chamber of Commerce.
The President said some of the laws against corruption have already been enacted while some more are still to be enacted.
“Everyone is talking about taking action against corruption and to catch thieves. How are they going to do it? We are bringing legislations to net thieves. It is easy to talk,” he said.
Sri Lanka is notorious for corruption largely in the public sector a festering issue that has driven away potential foreign investors in the country among other things.
Wide spread corruption along with waste has also been blamed on the current poor economic condition of the country.
