Member of Parliament Rajitha Senaratne has come under fire for a recent statement concerning expatriate workers’ participation in Sri Lanka’s elections. In his remarks, broadcasted on a YouTube channel, Senaratne allegedly threatened expatriate workers by saying, “This time come and vote for Anura and leave us fu**ed.”
The statement has been condemned by the National People’s Force (NPF), which has formally lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. Sunil Handunnetthi, representing the NPF, argues that Senaratne’s comments constitute a direct threat to expatriate workers and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
Handunnetthi’s complaint emphasizes concerns about the coercive nature of the statement and its potential impact on the free and fair exercise of voting rights by expatriate Sri Lankans. The Election Commission is expected to review the complaint and address the issue in accordance with electoral regulations.
