Kottawa, August 31, 2024 — Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, representing the National People’s Power (NPP), has announced plans to strengthen Sri Lanka’s public transport system as part of his broader economic strategy. Speaking at a public rally held in Kottawa, Dissanayake emphasized the need to provide immediate relief to the public until the economy stabilizes.
Dissanayake highlighted the financial burden many Sri Lankans face due to transportation costs, stating that a significant portion of citizens’ income is spent on daily commuting. To address this issue, the NPP government, if elected, plans to prioritize the enhancement of public transport services across the country.
“We recognize that people need reliable and affordable transportation options,” Dissanayake said. “While we respect the choice of individuals who want to purchase cars or bicycles, our focus will be on making public transport a viable and efficient alternative for everyone.”
In addition to improving public transport, Dissanayake announced that the NPP government would eliminate Value Added Tax (VAT) on public transportation services, reducing costs for commuters. This measure is part of a broader relief package intended to alleviate the financial pressures on the public while the government works to stabilize the economy.
Dissanayake’s promises align with the NPP’s commitment to addressing the immediate needs of the population while laying the groundwork for long-term economic recovery and growth. His campaign continues to focus on practical solutions to the country’s pressing issues, particularly in areas such as transportation, economic relief, and social equity.
