Colombo, August 31, 2024 — Legal action will be pursued following allegations of election law violations at a youth conference chaired by the President on August 30, 2024. The conference, held at the Maharagama National Youth Service Council Auditorium, has faced scrutiny for multiple infractions.
Election officials intervened to halt the distribution of lunch prepared for attendees, citing concerns over potential breaches of election laws during the event. Additionally, a president and secretary of a youth association reportedly delivered political speeches, violating regulations that prohibit political activity at such events. The use of state resources for a performance by a dance group from the Youth Service Council was also flagged as misuse of state property for political purposes.
The Colombo District Election Dispute Resolution Center has directed the Maharagama Police to take legal action against those involved in these violations. This move highlights the importance of adhering to election laws and maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
The President, who attended and delivered the keynote address at the conference, is at the center of the controversy. Originally intended to engage youth and showcase government initiatives, the conference has instead drawn criticism for alleged misuse of state resources and breaches of electoral norms.
