London, August 31, 2024 — Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando has etched his name into the prestigious honor roll at Lord’s ground in England with a standout performance. On August 30, 2024, Fernando achieved a remarkable feat by taking five wickets in an innings during the second Test match against England.
Since 2014, Lord’s has celebrated bowlers who take five or more wickets in a match by adding their names to the honor roll. Asitha Fernando is now recognized as the first Sri Lankan bowler to join this distinguished list. In his impressive spell, Fernando claimed five wickets for 102 runs, dismissing notable English batsmen including Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Olly Stone.
Fernando’s performance is significant in Sri Lankan cricket history as he is only the second Sri Lankan bowler to achieve this milestone at Lord’s. The first was Rumesh Ratnayake, who took five wickets for 69 runs in 1991. Asitha Fernando’s achievement underscores his exceptional skill and contributes to Sri Lanka’s cricketing legacy at one of the most iconic venues in the sport.
