Colombo, Sri Lanka – September 1, 2024
In a significant move, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed deep regret for the hardships faced by the Muslim community during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly concerning burial practices. Addressing a rally in Kattankudi on August 31, President Wickremesinghe announced plans to introduce a new law that will permit both burial and cremation based on individual preferences.
The President also revealed that a committee will be formed to investigate the accountability of those responsible for the policy mandating cremation, which affected many Muslim families. This move is aimed at providing justice and compensation to those who suffered injustices due to the previous policy.
During his speech at the “Puluwan Sri Lanka” victory rally, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the need for unity among all ethnic groups—Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim—as the country progresses. He highlighted the importance of working together to strengthen Sri Lanka’s economy and denounced racism and bigotry.
In addition to his remarks on the burial policy, President Wickremesinghe addressed the political landscape ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Another rally was held in Sammanthurai to bolster support for his candidacy, drawing a large crowd.
The President responded to previous criticism from Rishad Bathiudeen, clarifying that the presidential election focuses on the head of state, not parliamentary matters. He indicated that he would seek support from those aligned with MP Rishad Bathiudeen and the Muslim Congress, provided they genuinely support his presidential bid.
President Wickremesinghe defended his administration’s efforts, contrasting them with the opposition’s plans. He recalled past actions by his government, including measures to protect Muslim rights and address economic issues.
Minister Ali Sabry, former Governor M. Asad Sally, MP SMM Muszhaaraff, MP A.L.M. Athaullah, former Minister Daya Gamage, Non-Cabinet Minister Ali Zahir Moulana, and Governor Naseer Ahamed all voiced their support for President Wickremesinghe, emphasizing his leadership and experience in navigating Sri Lanka’s current challenges.
The President’s commitment to resolving long-standing issues and ensuring a fair election process reflects his focus on addressing past grievances while preparing for the future.
