In a recent development, the Election Commission has intervened in a public meeting held at the Festival Hall in Gampola Bothalapitiya, in support of an independent presidential candidate. The Commission took action after receiving a complaint regarding the planned distribution of Biryani to attendees.
According to reports, the event organizers had prepared enough food to serve 1,500 supporters. The Election Commission officials arrived before the meeting began, seizing the prepared Biryani and placing part of it in the custody of the Gampola Police.
The raid was conducted following concerns that the provision of such food could be considered a violation of election regulations, potentially influencing voter behavior. Notably, the meeting was attended by several influential politicians.
Despite the seizure of the food, the meeting proceeded as scheduled, with guest speakers addressing the crowd into the early hours of the morning. The Election Commission’s intervention underscores its ongoing efforts to enforce fair electoral practices and prevent any undue influence on the election process.
