Colombo, September 2, 2024 — The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the implementation of significant salary increments for public sector employees, based on the recommendations of the Presidential Expert Committee chaired by Udaya R. Seneviratne. This committee, appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was tasked with addressing salary discrepancies within the government sector.
Effective January 1, 2025, the basic salary for public service employees will see substantial increases, ranging from 24% for the lowest ranks to over 50% for various public service professionals, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

Implementation and Additional Measures:
The Cabinet has also recommended doubling all salary increment values annually for government employees. These salary increases will be extended to public corporations, boards, statutory bodies, universities, and the armed forces starting January 1, 2025, as part of a broader effort to standardize and improve compensation across the public sector.
