Independent presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced his commitment to resolving the current backlog in passport issuance and promoting foreign employment opportunities for Sri Lankans. Speaking during the “Ask Me – Anything” program held for a professional forum, Wickremesinghe addressed the need for digitization in both the passport system and the labor sector.
Wickremesinghe emphasized that the ongoing digitalization of the passport process will continue without interruption. He also highlighted the importance of expanding opportunities for Sri Lankans seeking employment abroad.
He stated, “Digitalization should also be implemented in the labor sector, and this initiative will be extended to all departments. We should encourage our youth to seek opportunities abroad and expand the groups that are allowed to go to other countries.”
Wickremesinghe revealed that discussions are already underway with East Asian countries to facilitate this process. Under his proposed program, the government plans to support 50,000 young people in pursuing professional training for jobs in the international market.
“We will cover the training fees for these 50,000 individuals, whether they choose to train at private or government institutions, ensuring they are well-prepared for employment opportunities abroad,” he added.
This initiative is part of Wickremesinghe’s broader strategy to empower Sri Lankan youth and create more avenues for their success on the global stage.
