Samagi Jana Balavega’s presidential candidate, Sajith Premadasa, emphasized the need for a data-centric scientific approach to revitalize Sri Lanka’s economy. Speaking at a business and academic meeting in Anuradhapura, Premadasa highlighted the importance of calculating the contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at both district and local levels.
Premadasa pointed out that Sri Lanka’s economy is deeply divided, with significant disparities between different regions. He stressed that merely calculating GDP contributions at the district level is insufficient. Instead, he proposed a more comprehensive approach that identifies local resources, deficiencies, and discrepancies to implement a targeted, data-driven strategy.
“Economic disparity across provinces is stark. By properly calculating each district’s contribution to the GDP, we can identify and address local issues and opportunities with a scientific, intellectual plan. It’s time to think honestly, innovate, and embark on a new journey,” Premadasa stated.
This approach, he believes, will pave the way for a more equitable and efficient economic development across the country.
