Colombo – Ahead of Sri Lanka’s upcoming presidential election on September 21, TikTok has rolled out a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting electoral integrity on its platform. This initiative underlines TikTok’s commitment to serving as a responsible and reliable source of information during critical events.
The company has implemented stringent measures to combat misinformation, violence, and hate speech, in line with its Community Guidelines. TikTok’s policies specifically target the spread of misleading information related to voter registration, candidate eligibility, vote counting, and election results. The platform strictly prohibits content that intimidates voters, suppresses voting, or incites violence.
To enforce these rules, TikTok has mobilized a global team of over 40,000 people, working alongside advanced technology, intelligence agencies, industry partners, and civil society organizations. The platform collaborates with local and regional experts to ensure that election-related misinformation is swiftly identified and removed.
A key component of TikTok’s election strategy is the launch of a dedicated Sri Lanka Election Center. Available in English, Sinhala, and Tamil, this center will guide users to authoritative election information, helping to ensure a secure environment on the platform.
In addition, TikTok reiterates its stance against political ads, including paid political promotions, political advertising, and fundraising. Accounts associated with governments, politicians, or political parties are subject to restricted functionality to comply with this policy.
Through these efforts, TikTok aims to support its community in Sri Lanka and beyond, while continuing to inspire creativity and joy among its users.
