Anura Kumara Dissanayake, presidential candidate for the National People’s Force, made a striking declaration at a public rally in Ja-Ela. He promised a major shake-up in Sri Lanka’s political landscape if he wins the presidency, including the dissolution of Parliament and a swift call for general elections.
Dissanayake outlined his plan: “Once we secure victory, the Parliament will be dissolved at the outset. I know some may worry about what happens to the cabinet until the new Parliament is in place. Rest assured, we will govern constitutionally during that interim period.”
He further elaborated on his vision: “When I become president, the positions of current MPs will be vacated, paving the way for new appointments. I will handle the cabinet appointments or, if necessary, consolidate subjects under the presidency, in accordance with the Constitution. If a caretaker government is needed, it will be established. My promise is that two-thirds of the current Parliament will not return in the next session.”
