The Supreme Court has decided to hear a fundamental rights petition concerning the “Gota Go Village” protests that took place in Galumuwadora. The petition, filed on September 4, alleges that during the demonstrations, the public was subjected to harassment due to dangerous spiked roadblocks placed around the Presidential Palace, which allegedly violated basic human rights.
The court has issued notices to the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General, who are named as respondents in the case. This decision follows a petition brought forward by lawyer Senaka Perera, who contends that the police erected hazardous barricades with spikes that posed significant risks to the public during the protests.
The petition demands that the Supreme Court recognize the infringement of human rights caused by these roadblocks and calls for compensation for the affected individuals. The case will be reviewed by a three-member bench, including Justices Prithi Padman Surasena, Yasanta Kodagoda, and Priyantha Fernando.
