Dambulla – Samantha Vidyaratne, a senior member of the National People’s Force (NPP), announced that if Anura Kumara Dissanayake becomes the 9th executive president of Sri Lanka, all government privileges granted to former presidents would be revoked. He revealed that a ceremonial event will be held to transfer the former presidents, along with their families, from their official government residences to their children’s care.
Speaking at a public rally in Kandalam, Dambulla, organized by Matale District NPP leader Gama Gedera Dissanayake, Vidyaratne stated that the party’s manifesto includes the immediate withdrawal of privileges, pensions, and benefits for both former presidents and current Members of Parliament.
According to Vidyaratne, the removal process will be conducted respectfully, considering the age and health conditions of the former leaders. The transition, which will include a special gazette issued at midnight, will take place ceremonially the following morning, with their sons and daughters formally taking responsibility for them.
Vidyaratne emphasized that supporting this vision requires casting votes for the NPP, symbolized by the compass, which he linked to a Buddhist notion of auspiciousness. He added that while political pensions would be scrapped, the pensions of public servants would be strengthened. Additionally, instead of subsidies, farmers would receive fertilizers at reduced prices under an NPP government.
The statement highlights a bold commitment to reduce privileges for the political elite and direct resources towards more essential public services.
