Colombo – Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has urged voters to carefully consider their choice in the upcoming presidential election on September 21, warning that Sri Lanka is on the verge of a bleak future if voters do not prioritize strong policies over personalities. In a post shared on her social media, Kumaratunga clarified that she is remaining neutral in the election, despite requests for her support from several candidates.
“I emphasize that I have not supported any candidate in the 2024 presidential election and have no intention of doing so in the near future,” she stated.
Kumaratunga expressed deep concern about the uncertainty surrounding the country’s future, advising voters to prioritize candidates’ policies, especially regarding education, health, agriculture, small and medium industries, international trade, and tourism. She emphasized the need for programs that promise the abolition of the executive presidency and a focus on good governance.
She reminded voters of the call for radical change from the 2022 people’s movement, urging the creation of a government system with full citizen participation. Kumaratunga proposed establishing a People’s Assembly that would work alongside the government, ensuring policies are reviewed before reaching parliament and allowing for more public oversight.
Kumaratunga ended with a heartfelt appeal to voters: “Our country stands on the brink of a dark future, and it is up to you, the people, to rise and bring about an enlightened and great land once again.”
