(COLOMBO) – Two killed as cop driver fell asleep at the wheel at a location in North-Central Sri Lanka on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place at the Thalawa-Kekirawa road in Eppawala located some 185 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo, police said.
The two women, aged 38 and 58, were of residents of Malulewa in Galgamuwa and died on the spot while the child was admitted to a nearby Government hospital.
The accident occurred as the van driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel causing the van to veer off the road and collide with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
The van driver was identified as a police sergeant attached to the Anuradhapura Police Station and he was subsequently placed under arrest.
