Colombo, September 5, 2024 – National People’s Force (NPP) presidential candidate, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, declared his intention to dissolve the current parliament immediately after winning the presidential election. Speaking at a campaign rally, Dissanayake outlined his plan to govern the country constitutionally during the interim period until fresh general elections could be held.
He proposed forming a four-member cabinet consisting of himself and three other members of parliament to manage the country in this transitional phase. He also suggested an alternative approach where he could assume full control over all government ministries, centralizing authority under the presidency.
“Both methods are constitutional, and if necessary, a caretaker government can also be established,” Dissanayake said, emphasizing the legal viability of his proposals.
These comments reflect Dissanayake’s vision of reshaping the political structure and governance of Sri Lanka in the event of his victory.
