September 7, 2024 — In a bold statement during a rally in Maradankadawala, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the National People’s Force, has vowed to dissolve Parliament if he wins the presidential election. Dissanayake’s comments have stirred political debate, as he has pledged to delay the next parliamentary session, originally scheduled for October 8, until after a general election.
Dissanayake outlined his plan to address the rally, stating that under his leadership, Parliament will not convene as scheduled. Instead, he proposes that the current Parliament be dissolved, and the country will be governed according to the constitution for a period of one and a half months until the general election takes place.
“If I win, the Parliament will not be convened on October 8. Instead, we will hold a general election and form a government with a two-thirds majority,” Dissanayake declared.
He also addressed the opposition’s reaction to his proposal, claiming that they are dismayed by the prospect of his victory and are currently strategizing ways to mitigate their anticipated defeat.
Dissanayake’s pledge to restructure Parliament and his promise of significant electoral reform signal a dramatic shift in Sri Lankan politics if he comes out on top in the upcoming election.
