Nethmi Ahimsa Fernando, Sri Lanka’s rising wrestling star, returned to the island last night (8th) after a historic achievement at the Under-20 World Wrestling Championship held in Spain. Competing in the 53 kg weight category, Nethmi clinched a bronze medal, marking the highest achievement ever by a Sri Lankan female athlete in wrestling.
The tournament, organized by the World Wrestling Federation, featured over 600 athletes from more than 100 countries. Nethmi’s performance has brought immense pride to Sri Lanka, highlighting her talent on an international platform.
A student of Velpalla Sangharatne Maha Vidyalaya in Kurunegala, Nethmi has made her school and the nation proud with her impressive skills and determination. Her success is a testament to the hard work she has put in as well as the growing talent in Sri Lankan wrestling.
Nethmi was warmly welcomed upon her return by officials from the Sports Ministry and the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation at Katunayake Airport, marking a proud moment for the country as it celebrates the success of one of its brightest young athletes.
