Former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara has fulfilled his legal obligation by paying the 75 million rupees compensation mandated by the Supreme Court. This payment was completed on August 30. Jayasundara made the payment in eight installments.
This follows the earlier settlement of a 100 million rupees compensation ordered by the court to former President Maithripala Sirisena. Sirisena received this amount on August 16, related to the same case.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on January 12, 2023, found that former President Sirisena and key security officials, including Jayasundara, violated constitutional rights by failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks despite having received sufficient intelligence warnings. The court addressed 12 fundamental rights petitions in its judgment.
The compensation breakdown is as follows: Former President Maithripala Sirisena was awarded 100 million rupees; Pujith Jayasundara and former Director of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena were each ordered to pay 75 million rupees; former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was directed to pay 50 million rupees; and former National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis was required to pay 10 million rupees. The court also mandated compensation payments to the victims of the attacks.
Alongside Jayasundara, both Fernando and Mendis have settled their compensation amounts. However, as of now, former Director of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena has yet to make his payment.
