September 9, 2024 – At a rally held in Kandy to support the presidential campaign of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate Sajith Premadasa, a mishap with firecrackers left eight individuals injured and hospitalized. Among the injured were six police officers and two civilians who were caught in the chaotic scene.
The incident occurred when a large quantity of firecrackers was set off all at once, causing an unexpected hazard. The force of the explosion led to injuries, prompting immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital.
The rally, intended to be a jubilant show of support for the SJB, took an unfortunate turn as safety measures around the pyrotechnics failed to prevent the accident. The event was momentarily halted as emergency responders and authorities attended to the injured, while the crowd was left in shock.
This incident has raised questions about the safety protocols in place for such events, especially when large crowds and celebratory displays are involved.
