September 6, 2024 – Colombo – In a notable literary event, Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne’s monumental poetry collection, “Rajali Sandeshaya,” was unveiled at the Nelum Pokuna Theater in Colombo on September 6. This collection stands as the longest book of poetry in Sri Lankan literary history, comprising an impressive 2,579 poems.
“Rajali Sandeshaya” explores the harrowing and heroic aspects of Sri Lanka’s conflict with LTTE terrorism, offering a reflective examination of historical events and personal experiences from General Gunaratne’s tenure as an army officer. The poetry vividly captures the essence of war, presenting a sharp and poignant reflection on its true nature.
The launch event was marked by significant cultural and political figures. General Gunaratne and his wife, Chithrani Gunaratne, presented the first copy of the book to the Maha Sangha. Other distinguished guests included former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, and Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, along with their families.
In a gesture of honor and respect, copies of “Rajali Sandeshaya” were also distributed to disabled war heroes from ‘Abhimansala,’ who attended the event. The presentation of this extensive work underscores both the personal and collective narratives of Sri Lanka’s journey through conflict and peace, adding a profound literary contribution to the country’s historical and cultural heritage.
