September 9, 2024 – Colombo – In a decisive move to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming presidential election, the Election Commission has issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers. On September 21, the police will be authorized to use firearms if necessary to control mobs and individuals creating disturbances at polling stations or disrupting election activities.
The directive includes instructions for immediate arrest of those causing trouble during the voting period. This measure is part of a broader strategy to maintain order and security during the crucial election day.
In conjunction with this, the Ministry of Defense has announced a special operation aimed at addressing the issue of illegal firearms and underworld gangs. The operation, set to commence in the coming days, will involve deploying special intelligence teams to support the effort.
Ministry sources estimate that approximately 200,000 illegal firearms are currently in circulation across the country, underscoring the urgency of the operation. The initiative is designed to curb any potential threats to the electoral process and ensure a secure environment for voters.
