Chanaka Dharmawickrama, President of the Association of Radiology Technicians, has raised concerns about a growing shortage of surgical equipment in many hospitals across Sri Lanka. He revealed that numerous hospitals are currently facing a significant shortfall of essential medical tools, with some equipment having broken down and left unrepaired for extended periods.
This shortage has created severe challenges in conducting surgeries, leading to delays and cancellations of critical medical procedures. According to Dharmawickrama, the lack of functioning equipment has resulted in substantial disruptions to hospital services, with both patients and medical professionals feeling the impact.
He urged the relevant authorities to address the issue immediately, emphasizing that the healthcare system is under strain due to these shortages. The Association of Radiology Technicians has called for urgent repairs and replacements of the necessary equipment to ensure the smooth operation of hospitals and the well-being of patients.
The shortage, he added, is symptomatic of broader issues in the country’s healthcare infrastructure, which requires immediate attention to prevent further deterioration of services.
