Ruwanwella, September 9, 2024 – Independent presidential candidate Ranil Wickramasinghe has underscored the critical importance of maintaining economic stability in Sri Lanka to avoid future crises. Speaking at a rally in Ruwanwella, Wickramasinghe emphasized the need for a strong economic program to secure the country’s future.
Wickramasinghe highlighted his policy statement, “Puluwan Sri Lanka,” as the blueprint for maintaining and advancing economic stability. “We need to confirm the stability we have created or we will go back down,” he warned. He stressed that his program is designed to sustain economic progress, countering any potential setbacks.
Wickramasinghe took a swipe at his rivals, particularly targeting Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s economic proposals. “What does Malima say, ‘a rich country is a beautiful life?’ I would like to ask Dissanayake. I looked at their budget. Is this the one with the hole?” he queried, implying that Dissanayake’s plans are inadequate.
In a separate event, former MP Talatha Athukorala defended Wickramasinghe’s record. At a general meeting in Gampola, Athukorala praised Wickramasinghe for his steadfast commitment to the country during times of crisis. “You all know that every time our motherland faces crisis situations, if there is a man who has extended his hand to save our motherland regardless of party, color, or distinction, it is Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe,” she said. Athukorala accused critics of not understanding the gravity of the situation or appreciating Wickramasinghe’s efforts during challenging times.
