September 10, 2024 – Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the presidential candidate for the National People’s Force, called for a respectful and independent environment for police officers while addressing a rally in Aralagangwila.
Dissanayake emphasized the urgent need to address the drug crisis in Sri Lanka, expressing his determination to create a system where law enforcement can perform their duties without undue influence from politicians. “We are not indebted to drug addicts. We are not afraid. Why should we be afraid?” he questioned.
He highlighted the current situation where provincial politicians often interfere with police operations, undermining the authority and effectiveness of law enforcement. “We need to create a country where policemen can perform their duties without bowing down to any politician, and honoring their uniform, star, and belt,” Dissanayake stated.
Dissanayake’s comments reflect his commitment to restoring integrity and independence to the police force and taking a firm stance against drug-related crime. He promised to dismantle the existing system where political interference hinders justice and to ensure that law enforcement agencies can operate with full autonomy.
