September 10, 2024 – Independent presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe has outlined his approach to addressing economic challenges in Sri Lanka, focusing on increasing the income of the people rather than providing concessions to eliminate poverty. Speaking at the ‘Puluwan Sri Lanka’ public rally in Medavachchi, Wickremesinghe emphasized his commitment to improving financial stability for citizens.
During his address, Wickremesinghe also shared a personal anecdote about the significance of a hat he received. “Many people ask me why I wear this hat. Let me tell you the story,” he said. After a meeting in Kilinochchi, a Dravidian woman presented him with the hat, expressing gratitude for the aid he had provided, including food, fertilizer, and medicine. “She said this gift was more valuable to her than a hundred thousand rupees,” Wickremesinghe noted, highlighting the personal and symbolic importance of the gesture.
In addition to his rally, Wickremesinghe participated in a concert at the Battaramulla Diyatha Uyana Open Air Theater the previous night, further engaging with the public in his presidential campaign.
