In a press conference held today, Sugishwara Bandara, leader of the New People’s Front (NPF), sharply criticized the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) for allegedly engaging with fake political entities and making irresponsible decisions. Bandara’s comments came in response to recent developments involving the NPF’s name being used to endorse presidential candidates without proper authorization.
Bandara condemned SLPP’s Secretary General, Sagara Kariyawasam, for entering into agreements with individuals claiming to represent the NPF without verifying their credentials. He described this as a “shameful” act, suggesting that Kariyawasam’s lack of due diligence reflects poorly on both him and the SLPP.
“We have witnessed a fake individual impersonating the Secretary General of the New People’s Front. This person, under the guise of our party, went to a certain presidential candidate and signed an agreement for our support,” Bandara explained. “We regret that Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam, in a highly irresponsible manner, engaged with this fake group without verifying any information.”
Bandara asserted that the NPF is a disciplined and genuine political entity, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining integrity and responsibility in politics. He highlighted that disciplinary action was taken against those involved in the fraudulent activities, resulting in their expulsion from the NPF.
The NPF leader further criticized the SLPP for what he described as a continuous failure to advance the political process effectively. “The SLPP, which has become a bankrupt political movement, continues to struggle with sluggish progress. Our decisions are made with the country’s interests in mind, not for the benefit of a family or individuals,” Bandara stated.
Bandara also expressed strong support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, stating that the NPF unanimously decided to back him in the upcoming presidential election. He underscored the importance of economic stability and the preservation of national unity, criticizing the opposition’s approach to addressing these issues.
“The New People’s Front made a responsible decision to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe, focusing on the country’s future and economic stability. We believe that maintaining unity and economic stability is crucial for the country’s progress,” Bandara added.
In response to the alleged misuse of the NPF’s name, Bandara revealed that the party has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will file a formal complaint with the Election Commissioner. The NPF is prepared to take further legal action to address the fraudulent activities involving their party name.
Bandara concluded by urging the SLPP and its members to conduct their political activities ethically and avoid engaging with fake or fraudulent entities. He emphasized the need for transparency and integrity in politics, calling for a focus on genuine issues and solutions.
The press conference underscored the growing tensions and allegations of political misconduct as the presidential election approaches, highlighting the need for vigilance and accountability in the electoral process.
