Sri Lankan athletes made an impressive start at the 4th South Asian Junior Athletics Championships 2024 in Chennai, India, clinching a total of nine medals on the first day of competition, including three gold, three silver, and three bronze.
In the Men’s 800m final, Sri Lanka’s Savindu Avishka claimed the gold medal, showcasing his exceptional middle-distance running skills. Tharushi Abeyshika also brought home a gold medal in the Women’s 800m final, with Sansala Himashini securing a bronze in the same event.
Merone Wijesinghe excelled in the Men’s 100m final, winning gold, while Dineth Weeraratna added a silver medal to Sri Lanka’s tally in the same sprint event.
The three-day championship is being held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, with the Sri Lankan team consisting of 53 junior athletes competing against their regional counterparts. The previous South Asian Junior Championships took place in Colombo in 2018.
