Switzerland has called for an investigation into allegations of arbitrary arrests, abuses, and torture linked to anti-narcotics operations conducted by Sri Lankan security forces. The appeal was made at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where Switzerland’s Ambassador to the UN, Jürg Lauber, stressed the need for accountability and legal action against those responsible.
Ambassador Lauber raised concerns over repressive legal measures in Sri Lanka, highlighting the Online Protection Act and legislation governing NGOs. He warned that these laws could be used to curb freedom of expression and association. Additionally, he criticized the continued enforcement of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, calling for Sri Lankan authorities to align national laws with international human rights obligations.
Switzerland’s stance underscores the importance of safeguarding fundamental freedoms and ensuring that Sri Lanka’s legal framework complies with global human rights standards.
