Colombo, Sri Lanka – President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced a significant expansion of Sri Lanka’s educational infrastructure, aiming to establish numerous new public and private institutions to meet global standards. This initiative, unveiled during a ceremony at the Galle Face Hotel on Thursday (12), is part of the government’s broader strategy to provide Sri Lankan youth with enhanced higher education and vocational training opportunities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Times School of Higher Education, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the importance of aligning education with the country’s aspirations for a modern, export-driven economy. He emphasized that the government would allocate funds to support 50,000 young people in vocational training at recognized institutions, complementing existing programs. This expansion of educational institutions is seen as crucial for creating the skilled workforce needed to fill the anticipated 100,000 new jobs in the public and private sectors over the next few years.
“Our goal is to provide the youth with the support they need to access quality employment opportunities,” the President said, stressing that the country’s development requires institutions that meet the high standards demanded by a future digital economy.
During the event, President Wickremesinghe also launched the new website for the Times School of Higher Education, which aims to offer diploma programs for A-level graduates and features a digital academy to equip students with essential skills for the modern economy.
This push for educational reform comes as Sri Lanka positions itself to attract increased investment and develop new industries, both of which are expected to drive job creation and economic growth in the years ahead.
The President’s vision underscores the government’s commitment to building a robust education system that can adapt to the evolving demands of the 21st century and ensure that Sri Lanka’s youth are well-prepared for the future.
