(COLOMBO) – A major security breach is being investigated after a young man slipped through passport control and security and edged close to a parked plane at the tarmac at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Sri Lanka on Friday morning, officials said.
They said the man identified as a 23year-old and a resident in the country’s commercial capital of Colombo was immediately taken into custody and handed over to the police for further investigations.
Initial investigations have revealed that the man was not in possession of any valid travel documents, a visa and a boarding pass and his intention was to join his father in the South Indian State of Chennai, the officials said.
Police contacted the man’s brother and learned that the suspect was under psychiatric treatment, but had not taken his medication for about a month.
The suspect was to be produced before a local Magistrate and referred to a psychiatrist following a court order, police said.
