The Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, has announced that the official results of the 2024 presidential election could be delayed if the counting process requires the tallying of second preference votes. He assured the public that there is no need for concern, as this delay would be due to logistical challenges, particularly in remote areas.
“There are polling stations located in very remote areas, more than 30 kilometers away from counting centers. In some instances, the ballot boxes will have to be transported on foot for distances of 5 to 6 kilometers,” Ratnayake explained.
Given the complexity of the process, there is a chance that the overall result may take longer than anticipated, potentially causing anxiety among the public. The Election Commission chairman also highlighted the critical role of the media in preventing misinformation and false propaganda during the delay.
“It is vital for the media to keep the people calm and ensure that no unnecessary panic is created. The delay is simply a result of the logistical challenges we face,” he said.
As a result, Ratnayake added that it is unlikely the new president will be sworn in on September 22 as originally planned. Nevertheless, the Commission is committed to ensuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral process, even if it takes additional time.
