(COLOMBO) – At least four persons were injured when a bus transporting supporters of the National People’s Power (NPP) was attacked by an unidentified mob on Friday morning in rural Monaragala some 337 kilometres from Sri Lanka’s commercial of Colombo, police said.
The group was returning from a meeting chaired by the NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake when the incident took place in broad day light.
Police investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the attack.
Meanwhile in a related incident on Thursday a conference organized by the Patriotic National Fronts at the Public Library and Documentation Services Board auditorium in Colombo was violently disrupted yesterday by a group wielding sticks. The attack took place during the middle of the event, leading to chaos and the abrupt halting of proceedings.
The Patriotic National Front has accused a group associated with the National People’s Force (NPP) of being responsible for the assault. According to eyewitness accounts, tensions escalated when a group of individuals opposed to the conference arrived and began expressing their disapproval of the event’s agenda. Verbal confrontations soon turned physical, resulting in an attack using sticks.
The attackers allegedly stormed the venue, causing damage and leaving several participants in shock. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, though the atmosphere remained tense throughout the incident.
Authorities are investigating the situation, with both sides trading accusations. This latest event highlights the rising political tensions in Sri Lanka, as various factions clash over ideological differences, particularly in the lead-up to the presidential election.
