The Weerakatiya police have arrested 16 supporters of the National People’s Power (NPP) for allegedly violating election laws by distributing leaflets door-to-door in the Medamulana area. According to police, these individuals were campaigning for the upcoming presidential election in contravention of election regulations.
The arrested individuals, hailing from Middeniya, Murutawela, Julampitiya, Wekadawala, and Medamulana, include a woman, a school teacher, and an employee of a regional secretariat. Following the arrests, all 16 were released on police bail.
Weerakatiya Police Station Commander Inspector Nuwan Wijetunga, along with other officials, conducted the arrests. The police confirmed that a case will be filed against the suspects in the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court.
