Colombo is bracing for a traffic-stopping spectacle today as 5,532 buses are expected to roll into the city for the National People’s Power May Day rally at Galle Face Green.
The massive convoy has been officially registered with the Police Traffic Division, which has now designated several key parking areas around Colombo to accommodate the incoming fleet. The scale of this logistical operation underscores the party’s determination to mark May Day with an unprecedented show of strength and solidarity.
However, there’s one notable absence: private buses.
According to Mr. Gemunu Wijeratne, Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association, not a single request was made from their side to provide buses for the event. “We were not approached, nor did we volunteer our fleet for this rally,” he confirmed.
The striking division between state-supported transport and private operators has stirred fresh conversations about political neutrality and logistical influence.
As crowds gather and the city fills with movement, all eyes are on Colombo — and on the sheer magnitude of this May Day turnout.
