University of Colombo exam case sees notices issued to the Vice-Chancellor, Attorney General and six others over alleged examination irregularities.
The University of Colombo exam case has moved forward after the Negombo District Court issued notices to the Vice-Chancellor, Attorney General and six other respondents.
Negombo District Judge R.A.N. Rajapaksa issued the notices in a compensation case filed by a student alleging examination irregularities.
The student seeks Rs. 500,000 from the university administration. He claims that alleged irregularities caused him humiliation and wasted his time, effort and money.
The judge ordered the respondents to appear before court on or before the 10th and present any response they may have.
The court has taken steps to serve the notices through registered post and through the court fiscal.

The following individuals and offices have been named as respondents:
- D.C.L. Diyaguarachchi, Lecturer, Faculty of Management and Finance
- W.P. Premaratne, Lecturer, Faculty of Management and Finance
- Shashika Abedheera Manorathna, Head of Department
- H.M. Nihal Hennayake, Dean of the Faculty
- Wajira Hapuhinna Jayaratne, Additional Registrar of Examinations
- H.D. Karunaratne, Former Vice-Chancellor
- Indika Mahesh Karunathilaka, Vice-Chancellor
- The Attorney General
The compensation case was filed by Sanath Kumar Athukorala.
He completed the Advanced Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management for the 2022/2023 academic period.
The programme was offered by the Faculty of Management and Finance at the University of Colombo.
According to the petition filed through Attorney Danosha Perera, Athukorala alleges serious unfairness during the second evaluation of two subjects.
Those subjects were:
- “Operations Management for Small Businesses” (508)
- “Business Strategy and Sustainability” (510)

A University of Colombo case seeks compensation over alleged bribery, examination irregularities and disputed results in a diploma programme.

The petitioner alleges that D.C.L. Diyaguarachchi, who taught Subject 508, made a personal financial request to him.
He claims that he refused that request.
According to the petition, a personal dispute later developed during a two-day workshop.
Athukorala alleges that the lecturer subsequently acted with personal animosity and failed him while departing from the proper marking process.
He further alleges that examination questions were leaked to another group of students before the examination.
These claims remain allegations made by the petitioner in the court case.
Results Allegedly Changed Without Re-Examination
The petitioner states that examination results released in January 2025 showed that he and several others had failed.
The students then complained to the university administration.
According to the petition, a new result sheet was issued in April 2025 without the university conducting fresh examinations.
That revised result sheet reportedly showed the relevant students as having passed.
The petitioner also raises separate allegations involving Subject 510.
He claims that students who did not actively participate in the group project still received full marks.
He further alleges that a student who had failed was awarded the diploma before inquiries into the alleged examination irregularities were completed.
The petition therefore questions the fairness and consistency of the evaluation process.
Student Seeks Rs. 500,000 Compensation
Athukorala states that he also complained to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the University Grants Commission.
However, he claims those complaints did not result in the justice he sought.
He has therefore asked the Negombo District Court to order the university authorities to pay Rs. 500,000 in compensation.
According to the petition, the claim relates to:
- Humiliation allegedly suffered before society and friends
- Time allegedly wasted because of the examination dispute
- Effort allegedly lost in pursuing the matter
- Money allegedly spent as a consequence
- The alleged arbitrary and unlawful conduct of the respondents
The University of Colombo exam case is scheduled to be called again on the 10th.
The respondents will have an opportunity to present their positions before court as the compensation claim proceeds.
